Blue Grass Airport
Blue Grass Airport, or LEX, is a public airport in Fayette County, Kentucky. It is the primary airport serving central and eastern Kentucky. Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, and Allegiant Airlines serve the airport. In 2020, there were 62,149 aircraft operations, whereas, in 2021, there were 151 aircraft based in LEX. The airport covers 911 acres, and there are two runways: 4/22, 7,004 feet (asphalt); and 9/27, which is 4,000 feet (concrete).
Airport history
LEX originates in 1941, as it was constructed to support airfield operations during WWII (it replaced two smaller airfields, Halley Field and Glengarry/Cool Meadow. The first commercial flight took place on October 13th, 1946. Over the years, the airport has undergone several renovations and expansions, including the present terminal building, which opened in 1977. In 2007, an extension of Concourse B opened, with six gates and four new jet bridges. Over the last decade, over $100 million has been invested in airfield enhancements and several support facilities.
